Opposite the back door of the Forbidden city is the man-made Coal Hill.  It was constructed out of all the earth that was removed to create artificial lakes for the royalty.  It is a clean park area with a temple at the top and, if there is only a little smog that day, you can get a nice aerial overview of the Forbidden city and surroundings from there.

Much better view of the Forbidden City than from inside it. And twenty times cheaper. Plus, a magnificent panorama of all Beijing.
