Apr 12, 2009 Tiananmen Square (the gate of Heavenly Peace) is the largest city square in the world. It was the south gate to the Imperial City during the Ming Qing dynasties. It was built in the 18 th century (1420) of Emperor Yongle’s reign in the Ming dynasty. On October 1, 1949 the founding of the People’s Republic of China was solemnly proclaimed from the Square. You can see group sculptures reflecting Chinese people’s history of revolution. In front of the Square there’s the Great Hall of the People. Aug 12, 2009 Of course, seeing the Forbidden City was beautiful. I did not get to go into the National Museum of China...it was closed. But what really got me was going through the Great Hall of the People, the seat of the Chinese Communist Party, knowing that just outside in 1989 Chinese protesters were massacred. To top it off, the place in the square with the biggest line to get in was the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong , who is still widely revered in China. Scary! Dec 26, 2008 Tiananmen Square is huge...and it makes you feel so small! Go at day or at night. During the day you can fly a kite on the square or at night you can appreciate the silhouetted buildings illuminated in lights...
