Wall
First built during the Northern Qi dynasty (550-577), the Simatai section of the Great Wall is considered one of the best sections to visit.  Simatai is 5.4km long and contains 35 beacon towers.  This section of the wall is very steep and considered very beautiful.

A great hike to appreciate the wall is to traverse between JinShanLing to Simatai.

Great part of the wall - not so touristic as Badaling. More difficult to get to though. Take a bus from Beijing and then take a taxi (70km). If u don't want to climb all the way u can take a gondola but afterwards u have to climb anyays and it is exhausting. Take something to drink. Prices of drinks on the top are horrendous (well, somebody has to drag those drinks all the way to the top)

I was so happy I opted for the three hour drive from Beijing to the Simatai section of the Great Wall of China. It is practically empty and allows for you to experience the site without the crowds. Allow for a few hours to walk the entire portion of the wall and back down and grab a bite to eat at the small restuarant near the entrance (it looked like a hole in the wall but was the best meal I had in all of China!).
