One of the most painted landscapes in China, the Li River is part of Chinese National Scenery.

I went to Guilin when I was a young child, but I still remember the breathtaking views of nature there. Coming from Hong Kong, Guilin was the first place in which I saw a unobstructed, starry night sky. Stars so bright my family didn't need any light source as we hung out on our hotel room balconies for those night we were there.

One of my favourite places in china, you can spend a week in this area - some of most amazing landscapes of China. Don't miss them!
The reed flute cave is very nice. But one day is probably enough in Guilin (big city).
The best is yet to come! Spend a few days in Yangshuo. This town is equally touristy as beautiful.
It takes 1 or 2 hours to go by bus from Guilin. You can also go by boat, but it is expensive, slow and long from what people told me. You could just take a bamboo raft (1h30) to go down the most beautiful part of the river. That's amazing and much cheaper! It is incredibly beautiful, you will pass the landscapes that are on the 20-yuan banknote!
One of my best memories was to cycle for a day in the countryside towards Dragon Bridge surrounded by the mountains, the fields, the farmers... it is really peaceful, green... Take a good mountain bike! or motorbike for the lazy. ;-)
You can also cycle another day to moon hill, the big banyan tree... not so quiet as you stay on a main road.
Back in Guilin, don't forget to go to Longji for amazing rice terraces in the mountains. I went to the village to the quiet village of Dazhai (where pictures are actually taken), you will meet just a few tourists (mainly chinese) there. It is wonderful to hike through the rice terraces for 1 or 2 days.

An awesome cruise. You see the mountains that you see in Chinese paintings that tower into the sky. Traditional villages along the river. Great if you have an adventurous appetite.

It's been a long time since I was there (1994). Probably it has changed a lot but I enjoyed very much taking a small fisherman boat along the river. Also riding a bicicle around the quiet rice fields.
