There are a lot of great sites to visit in Nanjing. The city is full of history and the Presidential Palace offers that and much more. In addition to all the historical buildings you have wonderful gardens. It is a really great mix and terrific way to spend the day or a few hours in central Nanjing.

Nanjing was the capital of the Republic of China for much of the first half of the 20th century. The Presidential Palace complex housed the Nationalist Government. From here Chiang Ki Shek lead the retreat to Taiwan in 1949. The Presidential Palace also offers early history including that of Imperial China. You get a little bit of everything here and can finish your visit with many wonderful meal options in the nearby 1912 District.

While Purple Mountain remains at the top of the list for "must see" when visiting Nanjing, I would also place the Presidential Palace right at the top.
