This is the most horrific and moving memorial I have ever seen. The memorial is set up over the old streets of Nanjing (Nanking at the time of the event.) It displays all of the things that happened in WW2 when the Japanese came in and destroyed the place. They estimate that over 260,000 people were killed by the Japanese here. Men, Women and Children - it did not matter. There are pictures of what the Japanese did to the children - nailing them through their knees and elbows to posts and other horrendous acts, all the women were continually raped and then if they fell pregnant - they were shot in the head. Or in one case outlined in the memorial - the fetus was cut from the woman. I had no prior knowledge of the event until I did some research just prior to leaving for china. Its disgusting what took place here and the fact that the Japanese still to this day refuse to acknowledge what they did. It can be a bit difficult to get through it all - it is quite overwhelming and can really be a bit much - make sure you are in the mood for it when you enter as it will shock you. Everything is written in English as well which helps.
