The dramatic Xumi Shan Bhuddist Grottoes are found about 50km northwest of Guyuan in Ningxia Province, in a magnificent and secluded landscape of rusty red sandstone cliffs and tree-covered slopes.
Many caves have been carved out from the cliff faces and there are some truly impressive statues remaining, including the beautiful 20m-high statue of Maitreya Buddha.
It is simply a joy to wander around this awesome landscape in search of caves.
You are not likely to see many people as the caves are set in one of the most remote corner of rural China.
