Qufu is the birthplace of great Chinese philosopher Confucius.  His homestead was later converted into a large temple complex to continue the traditions of his teachings.  Many of the original stelae on the site were badly damaged during the Cultural Revolution.  Repairs have been made to some artifacts, but the damage is still visible.

The Confucius Temple is a very serene and peaceful complex, through which one could easily wander for hours. Architecture is very typical Chinese. Outside the palace, all of the vendors and restaurant owners are in competition and boast their blood connection to Confucius as one closer degree of relation than the neighboring restaurateur to try to attract your patronage. A visit to Qufu makes for a nice day trip.

Although it's cool to visit the birthplace of Confucius, it's really not as magnificent or scenic as other temples around China. I would recommend it only if you're a big fan of Confucius.
