The Bifengxia Panda Reserve a large reserve complex in Sichuan Province outside the city of Ya'an. The Reserve has a section dedicated to the care of panda research and conservation and is a branch of the renown Wolong Panda Reserve. In addition to the pandas, the reserve also houses a zoo/animal park, which attracts many tourists and a resort perched above the Bifeng Gorge. Close to Tibet, the resort puts on several Tibetan cultural shows.

Legend has it that the gorge was formed by the Chinese mythological goddess Nuwa, whose image is visible throughout the Bifengxia resort area.

The whole Bifengxia experience was a little unbelievable, as all the stimuli was either very commercial or very natural, without much overlap. The zoo brought humans in very close contact with animals, either by feeding giant felines out the side of a safari vehicle, bottle-feeding giant koi or golden pheasants in the aviary. On the contrary, the reserve houses hectares of pristine lands that are dedicated to conserving nature and showcasing the natural beauty of the Bifeng Gorge ecosystem. A strange place!
