Founded in 1447 by the first Dalai Lama (Gendun Drup), Tashilhunpo has historically been a culturally important monastery.  Features include the Gudong - the Panchen Lama's place, the Main Chanting Hall, the Sutra Hall, the Gyeni Chanting Hall, the Ngang College, the Great Courtyard, the Great Gallery, and numerous Roof Chapels.

Tashilumpo monastery is the first to have said to have spy monks. If a guide says something the "spy" monks don't like, the poor guide could loose his license. The even ask for an astronomical fee if you take pictures with your camara, but besides that it is a nice monastery with beautiful statues and lots of shrines.
