The Arenal Volcano, situated in north-western Costa Rica, is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, with a minor eruption every 5 - 10 minutes. Because most of the eruptions are fairly minor, it is possible to view the volcano "up close", provided that visitors stay within the safe viewing distance. In fact at night, the eruption can be a spectacular site, as molten lava flows down the sides.
The Arenal volcano rises up 1657 metres, and are part of the Arenal Volcano Park. Some of the best viewing spots of the volcano are at Arenal Lake.

It's an amazing volcano to visit!! There's a lot to visit around it, including a volcano lake. There's the national park which is incredibly gorgeous!! There's the Paz Waterfall near it, with like 4 different waterfalls in total. There's the butterfly garden, the orchid garden, the snake garden (it's inside), the frog garden (also inside), and the humming bird garden. Also they have monkeys and many different species of birds (like parrots, toucan). All was amazing and incredible to see!!

The attraction of Arenal is the ability to see the laval flwos at night and eruptions. Unfortunately I visited during the wrong season when it was overcast and cloudy for many days. We could not even see the volcano at all from La Fortuna. Only one morning as I woke up I caught a glimpse. So just a lesson learned...the volcano isn't always easily visible. I'll have to return one day.

Stay in the closest hotel, like the Observatory Lodge and go hiking to the rivers and mountains around also to the old lava, you should take a trip to the hot spring too. If you have time you can also horse back to Monteverde Rainforest, the lake is nice too and you can wind surf or fish for bass.

The volcano is absolutely gorgeous, and you can hike right to the base of it. If you go to Costa Rica, you have to visit Arenal. It is also one of the best places to go zip-lining in because the view is spectacular. If you're lucky to pick a good tour, you can zip-line above a river ravine.
