Stadium Maksmir was officially opened on 5th May, 1912. It has been reconstructed several times since than. The seats were installed on the east and south stand in 1997. During the last “face lifting” a year later, the old north stand was pulled down. The new comfortable stand was built in its place with the capacity of 10.965 seats. New “north” has also been decorated by new glass building containing 15.000 m of business offices. The “east standing” was also pulled down. The places for spectators could exclusively be sitting places according to the new Uefa regulations. The reconstruction of the west stand, with 12.600 seats and 718 V.I.P. places in special suits, was finished just before the opening ceremony of World Military Games in 1999. 80% of planned reconstruction was accomplished so the current capacity of the stadium is 40.000 places. New seats in blue color have been installed in order to make the spectators feel more comfortable.
The final phase of the reconstruction included lowering the lawn and making the “ring” round the pitch in the place of running track and thus gain 16.000 new seats with the annex to he south stand, the stadium will have 60.000 comfortable sitting places. The Maximir stadium will be exclusively football stadium like many others in Europe and thus we will be given the opportunity to host final matches of European Championships. It has additionally been planned to built: new premises for Club’s Managmant, Elegant “Blue Lounge”, Big “Trophy room”, football school premises, changing room, coach staff room, sports hall with gym, out patient clinic, restaurant, luxury hotel (“A” category) with 46 beds for visiting teams special importance will be given to the building which will connect west stand to the north stand. By this, all conditions for hosting and organizing big European matches will be fulfilled (including UEFA offices, press club, press center, V.I.P. hospitality…). Maximir stadium will be one of the best equipped stadiums in Europe. The authors of “the reconstruction study” are prof.dr. Nikola Filipović and prof. Branko Kincl. The main designer was Branko Kincl with co-architects Damir Smajlović and Goran Tončić. The installations designer was civ.eng. Željko Bratković and roof designer was Mike Otlet from WS-Atkins-Oxford Chilbrook, Oasis bussines park Eynsham, Oxon.

Getting there:
By car
The stadium is placed in the north-east part of the city, opposite the largest city park Maximir which is also the name of that district. You can reach the stadium by car if you drive along Maximirska or Zvonimirova street. The approach from the high way is quite simple and you can follow the direction on the map. We recommended the public transport in the time of big matches (National Premier League or any International matches.)
By tram
The tram of Zagreb Electric Tram (ZET) will bring you to the very entrances of the stadium trams No.’s 4,11,12 and 7 are running to the Maximir tram stop while trams 1,17 and 9 will bring you to Svetice tram stop. On the Zet’s map (bellow) you can find detailed scheme of all tram and bus lines.

Not yet finished stadium, but a great one. It hosted the U2 concerts, Marko Perkovic Thompson and Dawid Bovie concert. His north stand (Sjever) is one of the most famous place for cheering in the world.

Pogledati utakmicu na Maksimiru je pravi podvig. Ko to jednom preživi nema želju za ponavljanjem doživljenog.
