One of mainland Ecuador's most famous and popular parks, Cotopaxi National Park features, among many things, one of the most active volcanoes in the world by the same name.  Cotopaxi is a stratovolcano with an almost symmetrical cone rising 3,800 metres high to a height of 5,897 metres (19,347 feet).  Its snow covered top is often photographed, the lofty summit is tackled by diehard alpinists.

Those interested in climbing Cotopaxi should start their trips early in the day, preferably in the dark, as the full round trip will be between 7 and 10 hours and the melting snow from the mid day sun can cause avalanche risks.  The best times to climb are December to April.

Alternatively, trekkers can tackle Mount RumiƱahui instead.  At 4,722 metres, the summits are a little less demanding, although the terrain can be muddy.

At 33,390 hectares in size, the park also contains plenty of wildlife.  Its inhabitants include wild horses, llamas, and pumas.  Birdwatchers will be able to catch glimpses of the Andean condor, blue bill pointed ducks, Andean gulls, and more.

Great if you want to spend the night in a forest, under the biggest active volcano in the world. Plus in Latacunga the food is excellent!
