Oct 20, 2008 The most fun part of visiting the Basilica is getting to climb around inside the church to the top of the towers as well as crossing the ceiling of the cathedral and then outside on the roof. To get to the viewpoint at the top of the belltower requires an exciting climb up increasingly steep metal stairways and then ladders. The completely exposed openings at the top of the belltower can be vertigo inducing. Needless to say, those with a fear of heights probably shouldn't go up. You can also walk across the ceiling of the cathedral below the roof on a wooden walkway and then climb outside on the roof for more views. The outside stairway has a lot of exposure. The gargoyles on the cathedral are unusual because they are in the form of aninals indigenous to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands.
