Established in 1996, the Area Nacional de Recreación Cajas is situated in the highlands if Ecuador, at an elevation of between 3,100 metres and 4,450 metres.  The tundra vegetation is sprawled over a jagged landscape of hills and valleys.  El Cajas national park is known for its extensive network of lagoons and lakes, with around 270 of them within the park.  Numerous hiking trails are available to access these lakes.  One popular hike loops around Laguna Toreadora and Cerro San Luis. 

El Cajas national park is home to a large number of endangered and endemic animals, including the South American Condor, the largest hummingbird in the world, the Ciriquinga - a large black and white raptor, the Spectacled Bear, Mountain Tapir, Ocelot, mountain toucans, and more.  The park covers an area over 70,000 acres.

An old Inca road traverses through part of the park connecting Tomebamba (Cuenca) with Paredones.
