2285m high mountain.
From wikipedia:According to  tradition, this is the mountain where  gave laws to the . However, the earliest Christian traditions place this event at the nearby , and a monastery was founded at its base in the 4th century; it was only in the 6th century that the monastery moved to the foot of , following the guidance of 's earlier claim that Sinai was the highest mountain in the area. Jebel Musa, which is adjacent to Mount Catherine, was only equated with Sinai, by Christians, after the 15th century. Also, for Muslims, there is a chapter named after this mountain in the Quran, entitled, Surah-Tin; surah/chapter 95. In which God promises by the fig, the olive, by the Mount Sinai and the city of Makkah.

Many modern biblical scholars now believe that the Israelites would have crossed the Sinai peninsula in a straight line, rather than detouring to the southern tip (assuming that they did not cross the eastern branch of the Red Sea/Reed Sea in boats or on a sandbar), and therefore look for Mount Sinai elsewhere.

The

I used to live in Sinai and trip to Mount Sinai were a frequent occurence. A truly wonderful place and I hope it will stay so for many more years for people to enjoy. Remember to take sturdy, yet comfortable shoes and extra clothing as even in summer it can get quite chilly as the afternoon settles - and yes, of course you have to see the sunrise :-) Most important, take all your rubbish with you. Over time with increased tourism the place has suffered and everyone needs to contribute to help the environment and your fellow traveller. Wishing you a fantastic time in one of the best spots in the world!

We went the lazy route and took the camels up to the top of Mt. Sinai- a great choice. Walking in the pitch dark, up steep, uncertain paths, we had to look at the ground the whole time. But, once on the camels, we could look at the stars and watch the lights of fellow travelers as they snaked their way up the mountain. Along the way there were stops for hot tea and blankets for rent. Then we all waited atop the mountain for the sun to rise. It was beyond spectacular. I highly recommend the journey.
