This temple is located right in the middle of Luxor, on the banks of the Nile.  The temple is dedicated to the Theban triad of Amun, Mut and Khons.  Amun was one of the gods of creation, Mut was his wife, the mother goddess, and the moon god Khons was their son.

There are some significant archaeological sights at this temple, but it is often overlooked for the much larget Karnak temple.  Look out for the massive stone obelisk at the entrance - it's twin now stands in the Place de la Concorde in Paris.

The magnificent Temple of Luxor is located in downtown on the East bank of the Nile near Luxor about 2km away from Luxor train station.
It was built by AmunhotepIII in 18th Dynasty in the New Kingdom and it was completed by Ramesses II during the 19th Dynasty. It was dedicated to the great god Amun-Ra, his wife Mut and their son Khonsu together representing the Theban triad.
It was the center of the most important festival which was celebrated in ancient time. The festival name was the Opet festival held from Karnak temple to Luxor temple.

Luxor temple is situated just on the bank of the river Nile in the great city of Luxor, you can visit the city either by plane or train from Cairo, I prefer the sleeping train it was good and not as expensive as planes. The temple is not as big as Karnak but you feel its more tranquil and mind taking. Just infront of the temple there is Mcdonlads where you can enjoy great views of the temple while savouring a nice hot meal

This temple was mostly built by Amenhotep, but was added to by Tutankhamun, Ramses II and alexander the Great. There is a massive obelisk at the netrance to the temple which is the twin of the one which now stands in the Place de la Concorde in Paris. The temple is lit up at night, so visit after dark - its not as hot, and it looks really spectacular!

The first thing I visited in Egypt and it set the mood for the rest of the journey. Everything I had just seen in books and on televison suddenly was there in front of me. Loved the way the early chrisitians built there church on top of the temple. You can really see that this place has a history and that it has always been important for the Egyptians.

The enormity of the place & the realisation of the existence of an intelligent & advanced civilisation that was capable building/constructing such magnificent temples, structures and statues is humbling, not to mention how beautiful it is at night! The history can get pretty heavy to take in all at once, get a guide and pace it out.
