Set in the Simien Mountain massif, one of the highlands of Africa, Simien National Park rises to a high point of 4620 with Mount Ras Dejen, the fourth highest peak of the continent.  Other peaks include Mount Biuat, and Abba Yared Here, it is not unusual for temperatures to fall below 0°C, and for snow and ice to appear in the upper elevations.  Formed as a result of massive seismic activity over 40 million years ago, erosion and natural wear and tear have formed a jagged landscape filled with gorges, chasms and pinnacles.

The massifs are divided into three botanical regions: the lower slopes that have been culviated and grazed, the once forested alpine regions, and the higher mountain grasslands.

The mountain range is home to three of Ethiopia’s larger endemic mammals: the Walia ibex, the Gelada (bleeding heart) baboons, Ethiopian wolves, and the Simien Fox.  Larger birds of prey include the Lammergeyer.
The Siemien Mountain National Park is a popular destination for multi-day treks, and the infrastrucutre for guides, lodging, and routes is quite good.

Popular stopover villages include: Sankabar, Geech, Chenek, Ambikwo, Ras Dashen, Mizma.  Simien National Park is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
