Jan 13, 2009 This church is the most famous of the rock hewn churches in Ehtiopia. It is defintely worth a visit. You will have to walk through the village of Lalibela, which is due to its location in the mountains not only fun. Especially after heavy rain some trails are quite slippery. But when you come near the church, you will see the rooftop, which alone is worth every step of the slippery walk in pouring rain :-) The rooftop is shaped like a cross. After enjoying the view from above, you will walk down a steep and narrow path to the entrance of the church. Take off your shoes (wear thick socks, there are lots of bugs in the church...) and enter the dark church. With some luck (and a few birrs) you will have the chance to see the priest in his finest robe, posing with the silver crosses. Take your time to explore the church, take a good look at the walls, you will find ald paintings. Sep 11, 2009 Despite being desperately ill with malaria, i made the 9 hour mini bus ride to Lalibela from Bahir Dar. Seeing St George Church made the journey worth it, and i would make the same choice over again. Personally i found St George the most impressive of the churches i saw (i could only manage half a day due to the malaria) and the outside is amazing. Look at the walls of the surrounding rock- there are still mummies in graves! Jul 30, 2010 Notice the inhabitants of the holes in the courtyard walls. These are actually dug-out graves. In some of them you'll see mummified corpses, while in others there are homeless people, using them as makeshift shelters. Related Links
