" Falkland Islands ? Why would you want to go there?!" my curious friends asked. "Friendship and penguins" was my constant reply. Luckily my friend was still there as the penguins certainly weren’t! Due to early cold weather in April most of the penguins, sea lions and the rest of the interesting wildlife had up and left before I arrived. The remaining penguins inconveniently lived at the end of water logged roads that had been closed. So much for seeing the funny fellows up close!
I spent a week exploring the small settlement of Port Stanley , acquainting myself with the many friendly locals and keeping the economy ticking over with frequent stops for "smoko". The land around Port Stanley is bleak and untamed – the perfect spot for windy walks in between hail and rain storms. The local museum was also full of the unique history of the area and well worth a visit.
