Olavinlinna Castle was founded in 1475 to help control the border between Finno-Swedish territory and Russia.  It is known as the world’s most northerly medieval stone castle.

Olavinlinna Castle is triangularly shaped and has three towers (each 30 meters tall) on one side.  There were additional towers built in the 16th-17th century, but these were destroyed when the Russians captured the castle in the 18th century.  The towers offer an excellent view of the surrounding islands and lakes.

There are also two small museums in the castle.  The Orthodox Museum displays valuable church plates, vestments, icons, and other religious artifacts from Finland and Russia.  The Castle Museum displays artifacts relating to the castle or artifacts found in the castle.

It is also known as being an outstanding stage for the famous Savonlinna Opera Festival.

There is plenty to do in the city but this castle is the highlight. It is the best preserved medieval castle in North Europe. The castle hosts a month long festival held in July.A few days before that you might be lucky to see and hear some rehearsing. It was founded in 1475 and named after a saint(Olof)Visiting the interiors is possible only with a tour which takes about 45 minutes. Some of the medieval halls might be rented for personal events(no catering included !)

The castle is situated in the southeast of the old town of Savonlinna and to reach it you first have to cross a bridge. The castle itself is build upon a sort of Island and is more a fortress because of the thick walls. The castle itself is well preserved and you can still walk around to see the different halls. There is also a little shop and restaurant where you can have a drink.

Lonelyplanet: "Olavinlinna Castle is in the beautiful Savonlinna lakes area, and is the best preserved medieval castle in northern Europe. Founded in 1475, it was meant to protect the Swedish-Finnish empire. Russians occupied the castle early in the 18th century, adding the jaunty red towers and a yellow house inside its walls. Take a tour for the lowdown."

Olavinlinna Castle has been restored very well indeed. That is one good reason to see it! It is also a place where you can enjoy of the unique atmosphere of Savonlinna Opera festivals every summer in June.

I've visited Olavinlinna almost every year since I was kid. It's cool because it's not in ruins, you can imagine yourself living there as a princess. :)
