Emigrant Memorial Monument
About Emigrant Memorial Monument
There is a monument in Hanko to memorialize the great Finnish emigration of one century ago. Many Finns left their homeland from Hanko, as it is the southernmost peninsula in Finland. There are three birds perched atop the monument as if soaring towards the sea. A number of the municipalities whose populations suffered most due to the out-migration have their names engraved on the monument.

Nov 16, 2008 This monument was very impressive for me, as it points to the history of my family and how they passed through Hanko, onto Liverpool and to New York City to settle in the United States.
