Dec 5, 2008 Suomenlinna is an island fortress located in Helisinki Harbour. The place is listed as a UNESCO World Herritage Site and it only takes a short trip on the ferry from the main market in Helsinki city to get there. Even though the island is so near the capital city of Finland the place offers a quiet, rural ambience in the middle of the Baltic Sea. On the island visitors can find plenty of nice spots for picnics, swimming and sunbathing in the summer or lovely walks in the snow in the winter. Facilities such as cosy coffee places, art and craft shops and museums are provided and guided tours and events (e.g. exhibitions, regattas) are organised all through the year. Aug 7, 2010 This historic island took part in major events when the Russians took over the island fron the Sweeds. It is also a world heritage site.Locals come mainy on weekends for parties and picknick on the grass. The island has even a youth hostel,a museum and cafes. The day will end pleasantly by just walking around. There is a spot mostly liked by artists who paint the beautiful nature in front of them.Check the ferries timetable to make the return .At the visitor center you will be provided with maps and explanations. An other interesting scenary is the docks where they still repair or buid ships.A visit to this island:mostly recomanded. Jul 27, 2008 Suomenlinna fortress is my favourite place in Helsinki (although I don't really have just one favourite place, there are many). It is reachable by ferry from the mainland and it's a great place for a picnic. It's a peaceful place (if you don't mind the other visitors and tourists...) and a perfect spot for a relaxing day out of the city. It is listed in the Unesco's world heritage list. Website Aug 22, 2008 Take a trip by a ferry to this beaufitul sea fortress located only 15 minutes from the Market Square in Helsinki. It's a lovely place to spend a day in a nice summer day, but definitely a worth of visit any time of the year. The views to the sea as well as the parks and fortress are enjoyable.
