One of the most famous castles in the world, Château de Chambord is also one of the largest castles in the famous Loire Valley.  Built in 1519, Chambord was originally built as a hunting lodge for King François I, and features distinctive French/Italian Renaissance architecture.  Unlike some of the other castles in the region, it was never intended to provide any form of defense.

The castle comprises a central keep, four bastion towers at the corners, and a very elaborate roofscape.  Within the castle are 440 rooms, 365 fireplaces, and 84 staircases, including a double-helix staircase, and four rectangular vault hallways.  It is surrounded by a 52.5km wooded park and game reserve.

More than just a great raspberry liquor, Chateau de Chambord is one of the three best Chateaux in France. By far the most ornate of the many Chateaux in the Loire Valley, it is an amazing place to visit. Stained glass and more spires than you can count. In the center of the chateau is a double helix staircase designed by Leonardo DaVinci. The staircase is so large that I slowly walked down the inside of the circular design, and Matt ran as fast as he could down the outside of the stairs...I still beat him to the bottom. Complete with huge grounds, a moat, a winery, and bistro style outdoor snack area...this was one of the better experiences of our Loire Valley trip.

Lovely chateau that once began as a "small" hunting lodge for the King and just kept growing. During the Revolution, much of the interior (art, furniture, walls, ceiling tiles, etc.) was either stolen or sold, so not much remains in the building now. One of the best things about the chateau is the double-helix staircase that da Vinci was thought to have created. Neither staircase ever meets and it is fun to have one group head up one staircase, and another go up the other (you can see each other through slats in the staircase).
