Renaissance
Located near the small village by the same name, the Château de Chenonceau is situated in the Loire Valley region, built on the site of an old mill near the River Cher.  The original building was torched as a punishment to Jean Marques, but was rebuilt.  The current building was designed primialry by Katherine Briçonnet, the wife of Thomas Bohier, the Chamberlain for King Charles VIII of France, and made more attractive by Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Médicis.

The château  features a formal garden and park, and houses a a collection of Renaissance furniture, XVI th and XVII th century tapestries, and masterpieces Le Primatice, Rubens, Le Tintoret, Rigaud, Nattier, Van Loo.  It is one of the most visited châteaux in France.

I absolutely loved this chateau! When you first come upon it, it doesn't seem like much since you are only looking at the narrow entrance, but if you walk along the water and look at it another way, you can truly begin to understand why this is known as one of the best of the Loire chateaux. Several kings, queens and royal mistresses lived here, and during World War II it was used as an escape from the Nazis (it was a bridge between Nazi-occupied France and the "free" France on the other side of the river). Then inside is lovely as well, especially the chapel area. One of the most interesting areas to me was the garden. On each side of the castle, lies one garden, but one belonged to the Queen (Catherine de'Medici) and the other belonged to the King's favorite mistress (Diane de Poitiers), both of whom lived in the castle and hated each other (the King greatly preferred his mistress to his wife).

One of the most beautiful chateaus in the Loire Valley. The gardens are spectacular. The chateau itself is built over the cher river, built for the King's mistress Diane de Poitier, she got removed by the Kings wife a de Medici once the king died. Worth the trip, easy to do day trip from Paris.

Built over the River Cher it is a unique castle that is built as a bridge. There is not that much to see inside but there are gardens and you can hire a little boat to go underneath the castle! Worth a visit but be warned of weekends and public holidays when it is too crowded.

This was my favorite chateau in the Loire Valley. It is built over a small river. An absolutely beautiful chateau. This chateau, Chambord, and Versailles, were by far the coolest of the monarchy estates.
