Located in Pigalle, in the 8th arrondissement,  not far from Montmartre, Moulin Rouge is the music Hall of Paris. It displays spangles/paillettes, feathers, extravagant decors and a multitude of beautiful women minimally dressed. Built in 1889, it was first a café-concert place with various attractions such as French Cancan, made famous by Toulouse-Lautrec paintings of dancers (with evocative names such as la Goulue, la Môme Fromage, Nini Pattes en l'air, Grille d'Egout, Valentin Le Désossé et Jeanne Avril ). The show with a completely naked Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, carried by 4 men and surrounded with equally naked women, made a scandal! After some difficulties including a fire, Moulin Rouge became a music hall renowned around the world. Celebrities such as Mistinguett, Joséphine Baker, Maurice Chevalier, Edith Piaf and Yves Montand, performed there. Since 1959, a restaurant allows patrons to dine while being entertained. Ella Fitzgerald, Liza Minelli, Franck Sinatra and Elton John appeared there for exceptional galas. Moulin Rouge inspired several.film makers. Among them John Huston with "Moulin Rouge" (1952), or "Moulin Rouge" of Jean Renoir ( 1955) and more recently "Moulin Rouge "(2001) with Nicole Kidman.

Before i went to the Moulin Rouge, i had recently seen the film and of course expected it to look pretty much the same, but it wasn't, in fact the interior is quite different but nothing less than pleasing. i thought the show was fantastic with a brilliant display of dancing, music and costumes. the dinner was a little average, but to me it was more about the fact that i had visited this iconic stage show, which wasn't at all a disappointment. i was however a bit disappointed in the fact that there was virtually no code of dress, allowing the average joe to walk in in with the scrappy T-shirt and jeans which i thought let the setting down quite considerably however if it's a great show you want to see it is defiantly worth a visit.

Although I saw the real moulin rouge after I saw that movie, I still loved the collors and the lights. But I have to be honest, I expected the movie scene where everybody starts singing the songs of the movie ; )

A little bit hard to find, but worth it. :) You really feel like part of the movie. But I didn't like the amount of "shops" around it. Still, I would recommend anyone to see it, is a must-see in Paris.
