Best to go at night as the queues can be really long in the mornings. Allow at least 2 or 3 nights to see at least the highlights. You could easily spend 2 full days or more.
The Egyptian area is particularly interesting (to me anyway) as are the usual Mona Lisa, Last Supper etc. Well worth an extended stay in Paris if you can.

The museum is very necessary to visit, just to not expect to see something extraordinary when moving to the portrait of Mona Lisa, illustrations can show much more than the original, however, there are so many other real masterpieces in the museum which will require you to spend days if not weeks on watching them...

I'ts amazing, and if it's possible, stay more than 4 hours to stay inside. Le Jaconde is not what you expect, but there are gorgeous paintings, like Joan D'arc and Napoleon.
The visit is not guided, but you can rent something like a radio that tells you some places to go and explain the origin of some arts.

One of the places to see if you are ever in Paris, lots to see so give yourself at least half a day. But a full day to really see and enjoy all the splendid art and sculptures on display, long galleries and lots of steps so take good walking shoes.
