Town Square
This large central square in the 8th arrondissement is at the East end of avenue desChamps Élysées, and opens to Jardin des Tuileries. It is on the axis : Musée du Louvre - Grande Arche de la Défense. Completed in 1772, it was designed by the architect Gabriel. Called Place Louis 15, it first exhibited the equestrian statue of the king. During the 1789 revolution the king’s statue is replaced by the statue of Liberty. The square becomes Place de la Révolution. It has a sinister past as it was there that opponents to the revolution (king Louis XVI, queen Marie-Antoinette, Danton and Robespierre to cite a few) were guillotined. To try to forget this bloody past, it is renamed “Place de la Concorde”.

In 1831 the obelisk of Luxor is erected in its center. This gift from Egypt was offered to thank France for the work of Champollion who deciphered hieroglyphs. The inscriptions celebrate the glory of pharaoh Ramsès II. It is said that when the obelisk (23 m, 230 tons) was erected, the king of France and his family stayed at a distance so they would not be ridiculed if the column collapsed.

In 1836 the square is modified with the addition of a monumental fountain on each side of obelisk. Rue Royale goes from place de la Madeleine to place de la Concorde , with Ministère de la Marine on the East and one of the most luxurious Palace in the world: "Le Crillon" on the West.

IF YOU ARE EXCITED ABOUT THE HISTORY BEHIND YOU WILL LIKE TO SEE IT. THE PLACE ITSELF OFFERS ONLY THE ARQUITECTURAL PIECE BUT THE VISIT COMBINED WITH A GOOD WALK AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD IS A GOOD DAY ITINERARY. "CREAM DE LA CREAM" NEIGHBORHOOD.

A beautiful sport near the centre of the Paris. The Champs-Elysee starts here and it is a long but good walk from here to the top with the Arc de Triomphe. The wonderful Orangerie museum is here which houses Monet's waterlilies.

You can see the twin monument in Luxor (Egypt). This is where Napoleon brought it back from. However, the Paris version has been restored and well maintained
