Sep 9, 2011 Wasn't sure if this would be my thing, but it is an amazing place to visit. The palace is luxurious but very packed during the day - I recommend walking through it late in the afternoon/ early evening as you can avoid having to shuffle 6 inches per step in the crowds that fill the place during the day. Instead spend the day looking at the outer palaces (Trianon, Marie Antoniette's Estate, and the Queen's Hamlet.) They are quite a walk away, so if you don't fancy that take the mini-train service which was 3.6 euros in Sept 2011. The Queen's Hamlet is especially worth the time, as it is a perfectly preserved 18th century hamlet, and extraordinarily picturesque. The gardens are amazing by themselves, but you could easily spend a few hours visiting all the themed fountains too - must be over 30 of them. But be aware that the fountains are not so interesting when they aren't running, and they only run at certain times of the day at the weekends. Plan it in advance so you can see them! Train cost from Paris to Versaille is very reasonable ... around 7 euros return and takes about half an hour each way. There is a small cafe at the Petit Trianon where you can buy a drink and snack. I ordered a hot chocolate and was surprised that it was pretty much just that ... hot melted chocolate! Dec 28, 2009 The Palace of Versailles took 20 years to build. The palace itself is just magnificent, and nothing compares to the huge garden out back. It's definitely worth the visit if you find yourself in France.
