Aug 14, 2008 The elliptical Roman amphitheatre in Nimes of the 1st or 2nd century AD, is the best-preserved Roman arena in France. It was filled with medieval housing, when its walls served as ramparts, but they were cleared under Napoleon . It is still used today as a bull fighting and concert arena. Apr 23, 2009 In July/August there is a festival called Nuits de Fourviere at the amphitheatre. The tickets are cheap (around 6euros) and there are everything from pop-concerts to theatre and dance performances (mainly in french). Also the amphitheatre is situated on the top of a high hill just to get the sweat out of its visitors. So if you want to be the sweaty tourist at the ruins... this is the place to go! ps. the way back is more comfortable on a bike :)
