Aqueduct
Viaduct
Thought to be built in the middle of 1 AD, the Pont du Gard, which literally means bridge of the Gard river, is an aqueduct constructed during the Roman Empire near the town of Remoulins.

Built on three levels, the bridge is 49m high at its tallest, and 275 metres long across the top, longest level.  Constructed entirely without the use of mortar, this bridge was designed to carry water across the Gardon river valley from springs near Uzès to Nîmes.  It is believed the aqueduct was capable of delivering 20,000 cubic metres of water daily.  The bridge is held together with iron clamps, and involved a complex scaffold to support the aqueduct during construction.

At various stages in its life, the bridge has been used as a water conduit, and later as a foot traffic bridge, and now preserved for observation.

Nearby the bridge, the Pont du Gard Museum shows a film about the bridge.  It is possible also to take guided tours to explore the region.

Pont du Gard is impressive, magestic; it attracts crowds... so try not to visit it in July or August. Choose a nice day, bring a picnique, books, swimming suits and enjoy an outdoor day with the Pont in the background. Ask locals about accessing it from the side opposed to the parking lot , you'll have a 15 to 20 minute walk on a path in Garrigue (combinaison of bushes, trees and shrubs typical of the mediterraneen bassin)

A nice place to walk around and have a nice summer afternoon. Around the ancient Roman aqueduct, there is a big park with restaurants and the possibility to do water sports.

A nice place to take a 5 or 15 meter jump into the deep blue river water. The aquaduct is an amazing spectacle in it's own right.

Thats a remarquable place to remember. Best season to visit spring or autumn to avoid the constant flow of tourists.
