The Bayeux Tapestry details the Norman invasion of England in 1066 in a series of numbered scenes.  Originally it was designed to teach a largely illiterate population about this historical event.  You receive an audio guide with your entrance fee that explains each of the scenes in some detail.

The one thing you have to see when you're in Bayeux is this tapestry, which is actually an embroidery. The people from Bayeux are obliviously very proud of it and where ever you are in the old part of town you can find sigbposts indicating where to go. The tapestry itself is really interesting and the audioguide they give you before you enter the tapestryroom helps making the story come to life. It goes a bit fast and you can't rewind it but you can always pause it. The museum has recently been remodelled and now you see the tapestry first and then the rest of the exhibition. In that other part you can learn more about the story and the tapestry and the life in medieval Normandy and England. Some really good models there.

The Tapestry is amazing not only in itself, but the fact that it has not been lost throughout the centuries since it's creation. The stitching is very simplistic, however depicts the story of the Norman invasion. Some pieces of the Tapestry are very graphic showing body parts that would have been very riske in that time period. Without the audio, you can simply view the Tapestry and story unfolds in front of you. It's pretty amazing to view and certainly worth a trip. Bayeux is a delightful town and the perfect location for trips to Omaha and Utah Beaches.

I rather liked the museum with the Bayeux Tapestry, though it's nothing like your grandmother's embroidery. "Look -- there's King Harold. He has an arrow in his eye. And look at the beautiful sewing here in this panel where the French knights are dragging defeated English soldiers behind horses"

I was much more impressed with this than I thought I was going to be.  It is quite spectacularly detailed and the story that accompanies it is fascinating.  The audio guide makes an enormous difference as well as it explains the history depicted in the tapestry, and the story involved is wonderfully interesting.

Both roman and gothic, this cathedral was built 800 years ago. It is there that the famous bayeux Tapestry was in the first place. This tapestry tells the invasion of England by the Norman-French (and the battle of Hastings) and has its own museum now since the UNESCO made it "World Heritage" in 2007.
