Medieval
Built between the 11th and 20th centuries, Château de Carrouges was built as a defensive fortification, but combines medieval defenses with Renaissance charm.  During the hostile periods, the château was repeatedly beseiged, first during the Plantagenêts, then during the Hundred Years War, during which a number of additions and changes.  These renovations continued during the calmer periods, but focused on the more decorative aspects, with the addition of the Pavilion of Cardinal Le Veneur.  During the wars of Religion, the focus again turned defensive, with the addition of the western Bastion.

In the 16th century, the castle became a private residence, with the addition of a music room during the age of Enlightnment.  The gardens in a state of restoration, and are decorated with iron pieces from over 350 years ago.  The original furniture and family portraits are still on display within the house.

Great chateau with history as both a defensive castle and a residence - makes a change for the purely "decorative" residential châteaux of the Loire valley.
