Église Sainte-Catherine
About Église Sainte-Catherine
This building was originally ment as a temporary solution. After the English troops left somewhere in the 15th century there was only rubble, no more church. Since all the effort and the funds of the state went into defensive works the local community took it upon them to rebuilt the church with a cheap and easy accessible material; wood. Honfleur being a port there were many carpenters around. The inside looks like two turned over ships.
The bell tower was constructed a few meters away from the actual church. This because they feared the weight and the vibrations of the bells might damage the church. 500 years after its construction it still stands. Payment Accepted:

Oct 7, 2009 Brilliant church, it looks like they turned over two ships and put some walls under it. It has a great atmosphere about it. The outside is equally quirky with its wooden roof and little innocent angels carved in the posts. The tower has a really odd shape. Inside is a museum which is not worth the 2 euros you have to pay, but if you have a pass Musée or a ticket for the Musee Bodin you can enter for free. The museum is ok, but the real treat is the whole wooden construction they have built inside to support the bells.
