Situated on the border of France and Italy, Mont Blanc (french for "white mountain) is the highest mountain of the Alps, as well as of Western Europe, at a height of 4,808 metres (15,774 feet).  There is a permanent ice and a snowdome across the top of the summit.

Mont Blanc was first ascended by Jacques Balmat and Michel Paccard in 1786.  This climb was marked to be the start of modern mountaineering.  The summit route is considered easy, but long.

Mont Blanc is partially accessed by cable car at L'Aiguille du Midi, which is about 1000 metres away from the summit.  It is also partially accessible by the Tramway du Mont-Blanc (TMB).  Mont Blanc is also pierce by the Mont-Blanc tunnel which connects France to Italy.

Mont Blanc is a very popular climb, and there are a number of climbing routes up, including several classic routes, which include "The Voie des Cristalliers", "La Voie des 3 Monts", the Historic Itinerary, the Normal Italian Itinerary, aand the Miage-Bionnassay Mont-Blanc crossing.

Just enjoy the magnificent view from Chamonix town on the Mont Blanc ("white montain"). you can feel a very special atmosphere here and walking in the old town is great as well. You are in the highest closest town to the top of Europe !!!
If you have time, take a cable-car to "Aiguille du Midi" to be more than 3800 meters high, and imagine the view you get from there...

Great fun to be there and to ski down the paths. A bit scary ride from the Italian side. A series of cable car rides, each taking you higher (and closer to the top). The first one looks large and safe, the next one is a tiny one. The final is a super-tiny one, and it IS scary. If you survive though, the views are magnificent. Just try and go there when the weather is really nice.

We stayed in Le Praz which is about 5 mins on a bus from Chamonix which gave access to the slightly quieter Flegere ski area which was great at the weekends and headed into Chamonix town during the week when it was quieter. Our accomodation was arranged through www.bigfoot-chamonix.com who were excellent

Mont Blanc is one of the great peaks in the Rhone Alps and is a beauty to go up in the cable car to the top. Great to see so many climbers come up on their own steam too!!! The ice on the mountain top is good to see even when it is not snowing otherwise. Great views from the top and from the cable car too.

Warning- if you're not good at heights, this might not be for you. Though it is probably worth it! Leave several hours for going up the mountain; there is a set departure time to come back down. Bring warm clothing for the top (even in summer!).
