Walking distance from the main train station. Make it a day trip. When you arrive to Heidelberg, grab a map and plot your way to the castle. There are two good routes: 1. Walking by the university (one of the oldest in the world). 2. Walking to the shop district.
At any rate, when you get to the castle, go through the rooms, walk around the grounds. Enjoy the views of the mountains.

The Heidelberg Castle (in German: Heidelberger Schloss ) is a famous ruin in Germany and a landmark of Heidelberg. These ruins are among the most important Renaissance structures north of the Alps. The beer garden right next to it is a lot of fun in the summertime too!
