Where it all began for the city of Munich , the main square is home to Munich 's number 1 attraction, the Glockenspiel. Marienplatz is also home to St Peters Church , the new and old town hall, banks; café’s is the beginning of Munich 's main shopping district.

Marienplatz is a central square in the city center of Munich. It is a must see place for anybody visiting this beautiful city. It has gorgeous architecture from the middle ages. The square was once a place for markets and tournaments. The main attraction is the City Hall which has a Glockenspiel that attracts millions of tourists every year. The Glockenspiel itself was inspired by the mentioned
tournaments of the middle ages. There is shopping and great food to be found here, too. Street performers and street art are always present, especially on the weekends and when the weather is good. During the Christmas season there is a market called Christkindlmarkt that offers everything from hot spice whine to Christmas decorations.

The city centre and the scene for most of the tourist action, Marienplatz is a busy place.

Street performers and souvenir shops in the square along with the big stores vie for your attention as you walk past.

The Neues Rathaus (new town all) houses the famous Glockenspiel- the dominating clock tower, does its bit and draws the crowds at 11am, 12pm, 5pm and 9pm every day.

in the heart of the city, Marienzplatz is a great area to explore. I had a blast checking out the shops, sitting in the cafés, and then wandering around some of the smaller streets near Marienzplatz. it is a very 'touristy' area, so keep that in mind. but it was a great place to stop and just take a short break from all the rest of the sightseeing that day.

The Marienplatz is an old square that has the City Hall. Most famous in the Glockenspiel which performs midday. These are carved that dance to music above the front of the building. There are also shops. I remember a visit when it started snowing as I was shopping and when I looked up the Glockenspiel started to perform. A wonderful sight!
