Oct 20, 2008 If you are into history you have to go to this Stadium. Remember when Jesse Owens dared defy Hitler... yes a historical and strong daring statement ... though it was not really intentional or meant to be a political intonation but as it turned out it did become one. Arrogance ignorance on Hitler's part? Yes!!! From Berlin city centre get on the U-Bahn and it is practically a straight route there and quite resonably priced. A long walk from the station right up to the gates. As you walk up the gentle hill to the stadium you are greeted with this huge grey and overpowering building with hundreds of square pillars. As you look up it is dwarfing you and mentally it makes you cannot help but have this secret respect for the architect. Admitedly it is Hitler's vision but really the architect has to take the credit for the ingenious structure and the surroundings. Despite the age of this stadium is stands proudly commanding a stature. To some the history of this place is depressing and a symbol of Hitler (which is detestable) but put that aside and admire how this building does not want to crumble or go away quietly. As you walk thru one of the many entrances you will be surpirsed that you will be looking down to the track and field about 30 feet below. That is so unsual for me and most I dare say. Admitedly this stadium has been updated and maintained. New granite structues have been added with names of past and current Olympians (from all over the world) have been engraved. A high tech and modern shop cafe has been added which has many items to buy old and new but understandably no mention of Hitler what so ever. I am pleased about that. Anyway it is quite a refreshing prespective on how the Germans view World War II - say no more. Overall quite an amazing place to see and my view on the Germans are they are really warm and down to earth people despite their hard exterior. Feb 17, 2009 Its a sport stadium in berlin there have been two stadia on the site:the present facility, and one and one that was built for the aborted 1916 sumer olympics Jun 25, 2010 A Olympic stadium with history. If you are in architecture you may like to see it. Newly restored. Here happen great concerts and sport events.
