The Pergamon Museum is located on Museum Island in Berlin and focuses on Middle East and Near East art and archaeology.  The highlight of the collection is the 2nd century BC Pergamon Altar.  This masterpiece was excavated from Turkey and then reassembled and housed in this museum built for that purpose.  A 371 ft long frieze of sculptures of gods and titans rings the base.  Other masterpieces include the 6th century BC blue glazed Ishtar Gate from Babylon (also reconstructed) and the Roman-period Gate to the Miletus Market.  There is a strong Islamic art collection and substantial other works from around that region.

The main atrraction of the Classical Antiques department is Zeus's Altar (180-160 BC) - a huge altar is the main entrance to the three main departments - which is so large that it has a huge room all to itself - the frieze around the base, which depicts the struggle of the Olympian gods against the Titans ... Very impressive ... they reassembled the frieze from thousands of fragments found in Bergama, Turkey. You can see the Market Gate from Miletus and lots of greek and roman sculptures ... If you are intersted in ancient greek history and antiquities enjoy the permanent exhibit.

My favorite museum of all time! If somebody ask me what to see in Berlin I always answer - the Pergamon museum. For me the main attraction is the procedure street of Babylon where back then Alexander the Great was riding through when he conquered Babylon. It's such a beautiful building with all these blue tiles and mosaic animals. Besides you find the Pergamon altar different sculptures and artifacts... the museum is highly recommended. It's one of it's kind.

The Pergamon museum is a hidden treasure trove of artifacts from all over the world. Where the British museum, etc have large pieces of art from various places, this museum has whole buildings 'acquired' by archeologists that have been pulled apart, transported to Germany and reconstructed. Highlights are the Alter of Zeus taken from Pergamon in Turkey (the piece the museum was build for) and one of the Gates of the acient city of Babylon.

Set aside the fact that these monuments where taken from other countries and that now you can see them completly out of context this is a great museum. I'm more for seeing things in there original environment but somehow the white marble statues and the blue tiled gate just look marvelous. Loved walking around here, take your time.

I haven't been for a while but it's my favourite museum in Berlin. The Pergamon Altar and the Ishtar Gate from Babylon are amazing!
