Charlottenburg Palace today is the largest residence of the Hohenzollern in Berlin. Originally built by Elector Frederick III as a summer residence for his wife Sophie Charlotte in 1699, the palace was later extended into a stately building with a cours d`honneur. The magnificent palace is surrounded by a baroque garden, in which diverse architectures melt into a unique ensemble. The garden is a fovourite place for many locals. The entire palace presents itself with majestically equipped rooms and saloons and with top-class art collections that offer outstanding masterpieces.
One of the highlights in the exhibition is the largest collection of French paintings of the 18th century outside of France. The ensemble of rooms and saloons - artistically as well as historically impressive - is a living testimonial of courtly culture and life from baroque times until the early 20th century.

The Schloss Charlottenburg is an early 18th century baroque palace in Berlin's Charlottenburg district. The beautiful park near here is a perfect place for Sunday strolls. It features a mausoleum, a pavilion and the Belvedere, now home to a porcelain museum. The mausoleum, a Doric temple built in 1810, contains the sarcophagus of Friedrich Wilhelm II among others.

I was there in 1990, as the wall was coming down. There were still goose-stepping soldiers on the East side of town. The palace held the most remarkable, world class, museum exhibits. Egyptian artifacts were most important to me.

A beautiful palace with a walk through self guided tour. I learned a lot about the royal family of Germany before Napoleon and World War I. This tour is great for a rainy day, and is a stop on the Hop-On-Hop-Off tour.
