May 19, 2010 The palace 'Sans Souci' (means without worries) was build by Frederic the Great around 1745–1747. The architect was Georg Wenzeslaus of Knobelsdorff. Located is that palace near Potsdam and therefore near Berlin as well. Since 1990 this site belongs to the UNESCO. Often they say 'Sans Souci' is the Versaille of Prussia. It's build in late Rokoko style. Unique are the vine cascades in front of the palace. The palace is surrounded by a park where you find numerous sculptures of roman goddess and gods Jan 1, 2012 San Souci is a beautiful building. But less well known is its beautiful gardens that extend well out of sight of the impressive palace. Another interesting feature is the grave of the Prussian King who built it who was also the man who first brought the potato to Germany. So it is traditional to put a potato on his grave. I didn't believe a word of that until I got there and was completely gobsmacked that there were four or five potatoes sitting on this grave. Oct 31, 2011 Potsdam is well known for its film studios and palaces. And while both of those things are worth seeing be sure not to go to this beautiful German town without leaving yourself some time to wander around the streets, look at the market or pop into some of its little cafes. there's a vegetarian cafe that does some of the best tea and soup in Europe, no joke. Down by the river if very pretty too. Aug 30, 2011 This is an amazing place and I wish that I had had more time to see more of it. I visited in winter and thought the gardens were in hibernation, the beauty of the place still shone through. The tour through a few of the rooms inside is excellent and I wish it hadn't got dark so early so I could have visited some of the buildings in its grounds.
