Czar Nikolaus II., married to Princess Alexandra of Darmstadt, badly missed an Orthodox church in Darmstadt during his visits to his wife's family. This led to the constructions of the Russian Chapel in 1899. Benois, the Russian architect, designed a picturesque building, richly decorated with mosaics, gild-civered cupolas and colourfully painted tiles. Orthodox services are still held in the Chapel.
The ornamental pool in front of the Chapel was designed by Albin Müller. (from http://www.igd.fhg.de/archive/1995_www95/darmstadt/city-info/Documents/Museums.html )
