Excavation Site
There has been a church on this spot since the 10th century. This church got destroyed in a fire after which they rebuilt it. The present building dates from 1172. The Gothic spire of the tower replaced the original Romanesque version in the 15th century.

Köln has many really nice Romanesque churches, this one is probably one of the biggest and the great location, in the middle of Altstadt makes it a favorite tourist spot. I liked it, it may not have been my favorite Romanesque church but it is still very impressive in its simplicity. If you have 1  euro to spare I would recommend to visit the excavations under the church. Here they found the foundations of a Roman "palaestra" and a Roman warehouse. All the explanation here is in German.
