Most popular attraction in Trier and for a reason; it is just very impressive. I'm not used to seeing such a big Roman monument so far up north. The inside is not very interesting unless you have a guide. No explanations anywhere, you're left to figure it all out by yourself. The views you have of Trier are not too bad but hardly inspiring. For the best sight come very early or about an hour after it closes. At those times there are hardly any other tourists around.

I piece of history being part of the oldest city of Germany. Though, this is only the tip of the iceberg so to speak as the whole town has an awe inspiring feel and plenty of photo opportunities. I'd post a photo but I don't have my cd with me at this moment. It has been a few years since I have been there but it was recommended by some people I know that live in the Saarland area.

A relic from the time of the Roman Empire. If you would like to skip a latin lesson, why not suggest a excursion to Trier? We've done it and it wasn't too bad over all. At least, visiting this Roman stuff like the Porta Nigra, the Basilika or the Ruins of the Roman Bath is a good reason, which might convince your teacher :)
Have fun!

The Porta Nigra is a large roman city gate. The name comes from the dark color of the stone. It's an impressive ruin, giving a good idea of how far towards north the Roman Empire had reached, spreading its culture and architecture.
The gate was partly reconstructed under Napoleon. Upper floors are open to visitors.

This huge "gate" to the city is still blackened from the fire that occurred there. The fact it is still standing and nearby are actual Roman bath houses still to be seen and knowing that Julius Cesar himself rode through the town, how awesome is that?!
