The Frauenkirche is a church is the heart of Dresden that was destroyed during the Allied firebombing of Dresden during 1945.   It collapsed overnight due to the scorching heat, leaving only rubble, part of the altar, and a small standing piece of one wall.     Reconstruction of the church started in 1993, and used the pieces of the original stones wherever possible (everywhere except the dome).  The design replicates the original Frauenkirche based on old photos and memories (down to the carvings on the oak doors, and the pigments used for interior colouring).   It was finally finished in 2005, and you can now visit the church and notice the difference between the old fire scorched stones and the new ones.

Dresden was one of the cities most heavily bombed by the Allies during WWII, and for no definite reason. Over the course of 3 days, hundreds of thousands of pounds of bombs were dropped on Dresden, killing at least 25,000 civilians, and nearly completely destroying the inner of the city. Among the buildings damaged was the Frauenkirche, which withstood 2 days and nights of the bombing before collapsing. Reconstruction of the exterior was completed in 2004, and the interior was finished in 2005 and the inside is something that really needs to be seen....it's gorgeous! It really is an amazing place, and by seeing it from the North side you can see just how much of the building had to be rebuilt, since this side of the building holds the largset amount of recovered material from the original building.

This church is a beautiful piece of architecture in itself.  However I found its history particularly intriguing.  During the Allied firebombings the church took tremendous damage and lasted only the night,  It collapsed the next morning.
The ruins remained where they fell until after reunification.  The church was re-dedicated in 2005.

It is located on the heart of Dresden. The church was destroyed during the end of WWII. It is amazing to the new church appears pretty similar as the old one. Even for the sound of the bell, the germans had to run such an experiment to mimic the similar tone as the old one. You may find a lot of cafes and restaurants near by this place.

Since the 30th October 2005 the Frauenkirche is now again part of the city's panorama. The rebuilding is an amazing symbol of international reconciliation after the second world war. Also the Neumarkt and the circumjacent streets are all rebuilded. This place is on my favourites spots in Dresden.

Wonderful Church, rebuild after it was destroyed in the second world war. As a child I stood in front of the ruins. 20 years later I was to times there and it´s unbelievable what they have done, such beautiful and spiritful place!
