May 20, 2010 This castle located in Thuringia is a UNESCO world heritage side. The very old german fortress was founded in 1067. It's name comes from the old german word for watching - so basically it's means something like watch tower or better watch castle. The history of that castle is very interesting. Here lived different nobles, St. Elizabeth and most important here Martin Luther translated here the bible under the name of Junker Jörg. The Wartburg is beautifully restored and you can take a nice little walk up the hill while enjoying the beautiful surroundings. But for the special experience (I did it once and it was great fun) there is a donkey station open at good weather. So you can lend a donkey and ride up the hill like in old medieval times :) Great fun for children too... (Call Mr. Hölzer: +49 36 91/ 21 04 04). All in all a must see if you are interested in history what changed the world! http://www.wartburg-eisenach.de Sep 15, 2008 Historic castle with grand vistas of the surrounding countryside. Reformer Martin Luther was concealed here under the name "Junker Jorg" and spent time on his translations of the New Testament. Guided tour available in German with English translation pamphlet. You can either take public transportation to the base of the castle, and walk up steep dirt paths to get to the entrance, or hire a taxi to take you to the restaurant just below the castle. Unless you're a German native, or part mountain goat, spend the Euros for the taxi.
