Dungeon
Built in 1482 as São Jorge da Mina, Elmina Castle is the oldest European building in existence below the Sahara.  It was the first trading post built on the Gulf of Guinea.  It was where captives were stored awaiting ships that would take them across the Atlantic.

The complex includes numerous dungeons, as well as the infamous "Door of No Return."   Another Ghanian slave castle is the Cape Coast Castle.  These slave castles rank among the most interesting and historic Ghana attractions.

Elmina Castle is perhaps one of the most important historical sites in Ghana as it featured significantly in the slave trade. Elmina is more picturesque than Cape Coast Castle and I found the guided tour (the price of which is included in your admission) to be more informative and interesting, this may be in part due to the fact that the tour groups were significantly smaller at Elmina.  The castle also overlooks a busy fishing port which provides an interesting backdrop, and given the traditional nature of the boats used, gives the feeling of being back in the days of the Dutch West India Company.  I felt that I walked away from Elmina with a much deeper understanding of what was actually involved in the slave trade and I would recommend it to anybody visiting Ghana.

For those of us descended from slaves this is a particularly poignant place to visit. It's a testament to the transatlantic slave trade. The place echoes with the injustic of the past and how the trade created wealth in Europe and the Americas. Amazing places with amazing views. Great guides to give the history of the places who are very knowlegeable. Worth the effort.

Toute une série de vieux forts, sur la côte du Ghana qui servaient à la traite des esclaves, monuments emblématiques, sur de très belles plages et des villages de pécheurs

This castle really shows just how the slave trade worked in Africa. Very moving experience.
