Located on the southern tip of Gibraltar between the Altantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, The Rock, as it is sometimes known, is a monolithic limestone strucuture 426 metres in height.  The upper reaches serve as a nature reserve, and are home to hundreds of Barbary Macaques.  These are the only wild monkeys found in Europe.  Careful when you are around them!  They can get a bit aggressive if they are interested in something you are holding!

Being made of limestone, Gibraltar is riddled with numerous limestone caves that can be explored.  St Michael's Cave is oneof over 140 caves.

Considered in ancient times as Mons Calpe, one of two pillars of Hercules (the other being Mons Abyla) in Morroco.

Gibraltar is a British overseas territory located on the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula at the entrance of the Mediterranean, overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar. The territory itself is a peninsula of 6.843 square kilometres whose isthmus connects to the north with Spain. Over 500 different species of flowering plants grow on The Rock. One of them, the Gibraltar candytuft, is endemic to Gibraltar, being the only place in Europe where it is found growing in the wild. It is the symbol of the Upper Rock nature reserve. Among the wild trees that grow all around The Rock, olive and pine trees are some of the most common. Most of The Rock's upper area is covered by a nature reserve, which is home to around 230 Barbary Macaques, (commonly confused with apes), the only wild monkeys found in Europe!

In the summer there's always a long line of cars on the street leading up to the rock. Then you pass it in about 5 minutes and I didn't find it to be all that spectacular. Later we passed it again when the sun was setting and that looked pretty but again not that amazing. You can only see Africa if it's a super clear day otherwise take the boat over to visit.

You can't imagine how badly I could laugh the day I went up the Rock and I saw a little ape that stole a bag from a tourist and started rummaging inside to see what it could find! He threw away everything he found xDDD

The view from the rock is magnificient and if you like monkeys this is your place to go. You can watch them and take photos but watch out. They might jump around on you or your car.
