St. Michael's Cave, located in the Upper Rock Nature Reserve about 300m above sea level, is a natural grotto has been in use by humankind since the Roman era.

Legend has it that the cave is a bottomless extension directly from the Rock of Gibraltar to the continent of Africa.

The cave is broken into several parts - an Upper Hall that features 5 connecting passages, and a smaller hall that leads to a series of other narrow halls, successions of chambers and more.  The main hall, known as Cathedral Cave, has been converted into an auditorium for concerts, ballet, and drama performances.  The auditorium seats over 100, and features what is likely to be a very unique acoustic experience.

During World War II, the cave was prepared for use as an emergency hospital.  Luckily, it wasn't required.

It's extremely acoustically sound and is used for concerts. Bring your camera to photograph the amazing stalactites and stalagmites. Outside, Barbary apes roam, and inside, soft classical music plays in the background, adding to the overall aura. The floors are slippery, so be careful. The part open to tourists is not big and is very open/civilized so if you're a serious caver, don't expect much. There is a plaque from when the Queen and her party visited.

St. Michael's Cave is by far the best man-made grotto I've ever seen... it's so solemn that you will actually feel the presence of the Lord while you pray...
