I only had about two hours to spend in this museum. Really one could spend days here.

It is difficult to absorb all of the collection in one visit. I stood in front of works dating back 5,000 years. Archeological pieces I've seen only in books, were within arm's reach: the Mask of Agamemnon...etc. etc. I barely had a full glance at the pottery work upstairs. There was just so much of it that I had trouble focusing on one piece over another.

My qualm about Athens and its museums, is that everything seemed to be under a constant state of construction. There was scaffolding in the front lobby; and a general sense of disrepair in the museum. The pieces seemed to be in great shape... the building, not so much.

If you're a history buff then this is the place for you. The Archaeological Museum in Athens was one of the most impressive museums I've ever been to. Consider that the oldest artifacts date back to 6,000 BC. It doesn't just contain your run-of-the-mill artifacts either. Yes it has your pottery, weapons, and jewelry but it also has many statues, tombstones, written works, and more unique and strange items. It it much bigger than you it even looks on the outside so you will need a good amount of time just to walk the whole thing. The one issue with the museum is that it isn't well organized and you have to walk through the same places twice to get to a new area. However, it is well worth going to if you have any time in Athens.

A quite comprehensive gathering of ancient relics of Greece (it couldn't have been any other way). A bit small compared to Central European standards (Berlin and Vienna museums dwarf it) but still, it's the original and it is surprisingly well organised. Worth your visit!
